Okay, I am dense... I have seen references to "Bob" scattered throughout this board, I am assuming it refers to someone at OPM or something, but I would like to know for sure. Who (or what) is Bob? Bob works in HR at SSA and he is one of the wonderful people who call to make offers. He is also a wizard at answering questions related to HR issues. Bob is a real name, BTW. Another is Melinda.

Yes and they have told me specifically they do not like seeing us discuss them on the board. They prefer to stay out of the limelight.

stormy -- ask Bob. But my understanding is that if you are paying regularly now and they want you, it should not be a problem Okay, I am dense... I have seen references to "Bob" scattered throughout this board, I am assuming it refers to someone at OPM or something, but I would like to know for sure. Who (or what) is Bob? When you make the Register (get a NOR with a score from OPM) & then make a city cert ( sent by OPM to SSA), Bob and his staff are the contacts for sending & receiving the forms for SSA ODAR ALJ hiring. Edt: And yes, they rock. Nice folks doing their jobs well.

Yes, let's cut down (eliminate) discussion of _______ and ________. JudgeRatty has told us how they feel. I think we need to respect this as much as possible. We can give the relevant information without using names. Pixie.

Does the CA cover discussions of the roles played by OPM and SSA in the "background check" phase of this marathon? Does OPM contact the initial references given? Does SSA also check those references, or do they ask for new references if you are placed on a cert? If OPM does all the background checking, is there any further "process" for explanation of any prior issues relating to the background check? For example and merely as illustrative of the discussion, if a person had a mortgage foreclosure on their credit report, would that be an issue for OPM or SSA, or both of them? I assume each have their own requirements, or is it such that if you pass OPM's review and are placed on register, those issues are settled and not raised by SSA or any other agency hiring ALJ's? Any insight not barred by the CA would be appreciated.

Stormy: Your credit rating is considered to determine if you could possibly be "bought" as a judge. When I went through my security check, it was not the credit rating that was a problem. It was the fact that my husband was not born in the US. I was asked if he has any particular alliances to a foreign government. The investigation terminated tout suite when I told the investigator he could ask my husband that question directly. He was three doors down in the office marked "Judge ---."
You have to remember that once you come on board at SSA, you have access to a lot of sensitive information that nefarious baddies would be willing to pay for unless they can just hack their way into the system), or bribe you to pay their claimants.
As an ODAR ALJ, you have access to lots of things people want. Social Security numbers. Benefits checks. The whereabouts of people whom others may be looking for. Salary/income information.

YodaPug: All issues are open to the agencies and will be reviewed independently of OPM. What is important to OPM may not be important to the agencies and vice versa.

To elaborate on this a bit. Your references you provided back when you applied will not be checked. If you make a cert with an agency that agency will ask for references. There are several threads about what ODAR asks your references, how to pick references, etc. when you need that information. There is some sort of preliminary background check before a formal offer is issued. After you are hired there is a formal background check by OPM.

Thanks for this, Gaidin. I understand the dates are speculative, but it answers a question I had about the order of being alerted one is "certed" and being interviewed. Yes. You get an email asking you if you are still interested in X cities and some additional paperwork (references and credit checks). Then if you said yes to being interested they will schedule you for an interview. Just out of curiosity, and a wild, fervent hope, does OPM pick up the tab for this interview (since the SI was at our own expense)?

OPM not involved in this interview.
