Just out of curiosity, and a wild, fervent hope, does OPM pick up the tab for this interview (since the SI was at our own expense)? SSA/ODAR pays your travel/hotel etc for the interview. OPM not involved in this interview. Thanks 71stretch! After the expense of DC (not that I'm complaining), that's music to my ears.

SSA/ODAR may not pick up your hotel depending on where you are coming from. They will let you know accordingly.

Yes, there are exceptions depending on where one lives and what time their interview is. But most people, including those for whom travel expense is a significant issue, are coming from far enough to get one night paid, plus airfare, etc.

If you wish to stay in Falls Church the night before on the Agency's dime, then pick the first AM interview slots if you live a couple of hours of flying time away. Somebody has to take the first time slots and they pay for the hotel if the Agency can not get you into Falls Church in time for the interview. Most flights from two hours out will not get you there in time for 8:30/9:00 AM time slots.
I did not do this, but I paid my own way except the flight anyway. I stayed the night before so that I could be rested, ready, and mentally prepared. I never filed for per deim or anything, too busy in private practice at the time and it was only about $150 bucks. Anyway, good luck to everyone for the next class!

I'm cheaper than Tiger Law. I put my voucher in right away. All I had to do was come up with the mileage; the very nice SSA OCALJ staff member calculated the reimbursement and the per diem amount for food, etc. Just about $300.00 which'll come in handy now that the Christmas bills are rolling in!
I live about 3.5 hours away and so wasn't authorized to fly on SSA's dime or get a hotel, which I fully understand. My interview was at 1:30 p.m. but I still chose to drive over the evening before and pay out-of-pocket for a hotel so I could be just as fresh as a dew-kissed daisy.

hope2balj, Oh, I would too for the mileage and per diem now. At the time, I was in private practice and busier than a one-legged man in a butt kicking contest. Everybody should file for what they are due, it just didn't fit in to my schedule back then, trust me, now that I'm an ALJ and have much more time on my hands, I don't leave any money on the table these days!

An ALJ that was previously in my office said he was given an early morning interview slot. The flights from here are only about an hour, so SSA did not offer to pay for his hotel since it's possible to fly down and back the same day. He would have had to leave his house around 4 am to get to the airport on time to make the flight, so for convenience and to lessen the stress on interview day, he flew down the night before and paid for the hotel himself.

Ouch. That's pretty harsh! I'd have taken the same path your friend did because a hotel room is worth it's weigh in gold if you are well rested for the interview.

If you can pay its weight in gold for a hotel room, why do you need this job?
