Despite very carefully double-checking reference information, I accidentally put Mr. X's phone number (who I decided not to use) in the space for Mr. Y's phone back in January. Mr. X got a call from the contractor asking for Mr. Y as a reference for Jagvet. Thank goodness Mr. X, who was a good friend whom I told I had decided not to use, called me and asked if I could get the contractor Mr. Y's number. Mr. X didn't have time to do it himself, so I called the contractor myself and gave him Y's number. Y later confirmed that he was called and gave me a great reference. Whew! Of course, I didn't get the call that round anyway, so who knows?

You may not realize how true that is. I personally know an alj and have heard anecdotal evidence of another that this week received reference calls on people they had no idea who were. Here's a hint, if you appeared as a rep one time in front of an alj se time ago, probably not the best reference. No worries, Funk, this really IS a great reference. I worked closely with him for four years and he ended the email with some very nice compliments.
But ewww, on your anecdotes . . .
catspaw, those are the folks who will help you bury the body. There a freakin' riot, especially when they know how nervous you are about the ALJ gig.
They always manage to give you a heart attack with the "I just got that call you mentioned to me a month ago, but I told them I was too busy doing shots of tequila and having sex with dogs to talk to them, is that ok?"
I actually had one friend make a 'copy' of the 'reference' he sent to my first federal agency. It was such a hosed up, ridiculous reference! I think I saved it for years in my files when I needed a good laugh!!
Good times, good times. All my references called me after the call from the contractor (last July) and reiterated all the glowing, wonderful thing they said about me. Thankfully, they left out the part involving their alcohol intake or choice of partners...at least they didn't mention it to me... now I'm nervous

One of my references let me know this morning he was called last night. He said he really enjoyed talking to the contractor and took his time answering all of the questions he was asked. Just wanted to let you all know that as of last night they were still making calls!

One of my references was left a message that said a response was needed by Tuesday (5/24). and this lines up with a delay in offers by the PTB in another thread. i thought it might be to get more refs checked. i am going to WAG Thursday afternoon for offer phone calls based on this new info.

I just spoke with the investigator making my reference calls. (They called me, fyi). I can confirm they were given until Tuesday to submit all information to the tptb.
And in case anyone is wondering what the investigators know about the rest of the hiring process, she asked me if I knew when they were going to start making offers!

JI, kinda curious why they would contact you. If you don't want to share publicly but wouldn't mind a pm with me, I'd appreciate it. It is pretty rare for the contractor to call an applicant. If you'd rather not say, I respect that too.

In very basic terms, they were questions of clarification about reference's positions in their jobs.

Just heard from another reference that they called him in the last hour. They are interviewing on Sundays too! Now I'm feeling bad for how hard they are working.

Once they finish all the references they can move on to offers.

Just had a reference interviewed this morning. My reference was told that the conclusion of his interview completed my application.

other than the first time references are called, do you think later calls to a reference are the consideration strikes that everyone talks about. In other words, when references are called you are actually being considered, and if you do not get the job, that it is a strike?
