Dear TPTB, Next time think about a "time is of the essence" clause in your contractor agreement. Just sayin'.... How about a late penalty next time?

I am assuming SSA hired contractors (plural) to handle the reference contacts. I selected my references and sent them in. I contacted them over the next few days to let them know they would get a call. Within a week or so, the first had been called and within ten days after that, 8 of 9 of mine had been contacted. The last was contacted several days later. All of this occurred several weeks ago. I disagreeumption is that the contractor presumably now causing the delay is a different contractor. Didn't I learn here that the "hiring committee" is selected from ALJs across the country who come to FC to work the list? If so, didn't they have to clear a certain time frame on their calendar to be available for the hiring process? Wouldn't it be difficult for that time frame to be fluid and adjustable for those serving on the committee? 1. The HC is made up of people above the ALJ level; I believe above the HOCALJ level as well. 2. It is not clear they have to travel to FC to meet. It is my belief they meet by tele- and/or video-conference. Look at the top of the ODAR organizational chart, and it is pretty easy to determine who is on the committee. There used to be a HOCALJ involved in the process. He was also involved in a lot of other F.C, activities. Not sure how involved the Associate Commissioner is today, but considering she is ultimately responsible for the job the judges do, I would think she would be very involved in who she hires. It is arguably the most important decision within the control of ODAR. So yes, these decisions are made well above the ALJ level, the HOCALJ level (normally) and even the RCALJ level. Look to the top and you pretty much have it. May have changed some over the years, but I imagine it is still pretty much as the way I knew it. Pixie.

I can confirm reference check stuff is still going on this morning. Accordingly, I would not anticipate job offers to start today. Sorry folks. Because everyone's GAL does not include each of the cert locations, isn't it possible that they've completed checks for some locations and can begin making offers for those locations without all references being checked for every candidate on all 81 individual certs? After all, if the location is not a part of your GAL, you are not a factor for that location. I don't think so. They make the offers in a certain order independent of whose reference checks are done, and then rework the dominoes as they go. I think they have to have the reference checks done (keeping in mind that they don't have to have info from every reference) before they start offers.

I picture an enormous dry erase board like they have in the squad room on Law & Order, where they summarize and diagram all the victims and possible perps. All of our NORs and cert cities are on a sticky note: green sticky notes for the "highly recommends," yellow sticky notes for the "recommends," and pink sticky notes for the "not recommended." 10 point Vets' sticky notes will have a gold star sticker affixed to them.
Step 1 - throw all the pink stickys in the recycle bin. Which is really a shame because pink is such a lovely color.
Step 2 - move the green stickys around the board until you have as many green stickys as you can possibly fit.
Step 3 - if you have any open spots on the board, sort through the yellow stickys to see if you can fill in the gaps.
Lather, rinse, and repeat when the next set of sticky notes comes in.

I think the refresh button on my browser is going to be worn out by EOD tomorrow if things don't start moving soon.

I envisioned it as more like a House of Cards episode. There was a large white magnetic board with the names of House members printed on magnetic strips. As votes were lined up or changed, Frank Underwood would move the magnetic strips between For, Against, and Undecided, so they knew which House members to pressure to get a bill passed or defeated.
I do like the idea of colored stickys though.

A watched pot never boils. reminds me of a joke I heard recently. We've all heard the pot calling the kettle black. Well, several cows broke out of their fence and went into a medical marijuana field. They started eating the marijuana. Soon the owners found the cows and drove them back home. The next day, the cows broke the fence down and went back to the marijuana field. This happened several days in a row. It was a issue of the pot calling the cows back. Gives new meaning to the term grass fed beef.

I think you mean the pot calling the cattle back. That would be marginally funnier at any rate.

I was contacted by one of my references who had returned a call this morning and was told the reference calls closed yesterday at 5:00. Hopefully, this means the selections were being discussed today so calls can be ready to go on Tuesday - fingers crossed.
