You’ll get there if that’s what you want to do. As many of you all know and for those that are new to applying, you just have to keep trying. My guess is this is a test class and things will really open up in the next few years due to attrition and other factors. In the meantime, stay sharp and keep trying to improve your skill set. Eventually, you will be in the right place at the right time.

Anyone still watching this thread? Interested in other people's experiences, interviews, hiring notices.... I personally have received four hiring notices. shmi1979 - are you saying you got offered the job four different times or you got some sort of final notice on four different jobs? If it’s the former - CONGRATS! THAT IS AWESOME. Did you get to decide between them or did they come in at different times? I interviewed for SAA jobs in several cities but the only one I’ve heard anything final about was Charlotte - I got an email Friday that they regretted to inform me that I had not been selected - that another applicant had been selected so if that wasn’t you - congrats to whoever got the SAA job in Charlotte! I heard ATL North and Kingsport had also made selections but only because other friends who interviewed in those cities got the same letter I got from Charlotte - I don’t actually know who got those jobs and didn’t interview there, but congrats to whoever got ATL North and Kingsport too! I always assume other offices are going to promote from within their office but I have no information on that front - anyone know anything else? My office isn’t on the list of SSA job vacancies this round, but it’s always a good experience to interview other places and learn more about other OHOs, never know what could happen. Good luck to everyone who interviewed - let us know what y’all are hearing! shmi1979 I’m sorry that it did not work out. I’m sure they will be rolling out more openings. Did they check your references prior to the determination email? I’m just curious about the sequence of events.

No worries, I've got other irons in the fire.
The region V ones definitely checked references around the times of the interviews. Other regions, I'm not positive, but I think it was the same.

It was easier to become an ALJ than SAA for me after years of trying. Yeah I always love to tell the story that I got a denial letter in October/November 2016 for a Senior Attorney job I had applied for (DIDN'T EVEN MAKE THE BQ LIST) AFTER I had been hired as ALJ in September 2016. I was like: "darn, I guess I'll just have to take this ALJ job instead."

Did the HOD make the offer?

Just FYI I was told by my HOD that the only consideration in hiring for SAA is the score on the resume and interview. Per my HOD, things like past job performance, PACS, or DWPI are not looked at or considered. I find this information very discouraging/disappointing. This means persons with lower DWPI and PACS scores could be selected over others with better DWPI and PACS. There is basically zero promotion potential for an AA in this Agency. I also heard that the application and interview are scored, and references can tip an applicant one way or another. However, I heard that the hiring manager doesn’t necessarily have to pick the highest-scoring applicant, as long as they provide a justification to the regional office. That may be also the case with any internal OHO vacancy (HCSS/HCSR, SAA, GS, HOD, HOCALJ).

The SAA vacancy announcement questionnaires in 2016 had specific questions about your last several PACS scores and what years you’d received awards, so that went into score used for the BQL. The applications this year - at least the ones I looked at - did not have these questions. I probably have the old questionnaire somewhere because I try to save my completed applications to use later - but it was very obvious the criteria was heavily considering recent pacs and awards.
But my understanding of all federal applications is that if it’s in the questionnaire- it’s going into the score they use for the BQL. If it’s not, it doesn’t. The computer scores everyone’s scantron and spits out a list, and that’s the BQL. After this point I do not know the details of the process but I believe it to be much less uniform than this initial questionnaire scoring.
I do not think everyone on the BQL gets an interview, but if you aren’t on the BQL, you def don’t. I don’t know how that initial score goes into the rest of the calculations, but I do think it’s possible that a lot of office BQLs, especially in urban areas - could have lists that look similar.

Correct. I can verify that if you answered yes to all the questions and could support those answers in your resume, it was not a guarantee you'd get an interview, but my data shows close to 90%.
